The workshop on safety culture in the wind industry took place with 30 participants on 14 September 2017 at Husum Wind under the motto “Good Safety is Good Business“. It was organised by VDMA Power Systems’ Wind Industry Safety Culture Initiative and the seven leading wind turbine manufacturers.

Representatives of the manufacturers of wind turbines and their suppliers discussed the two questions

Cost reduction, price pressure and safety: a contradiction?

• What good experiences do you have when selling safety?

• Why is safety good business?

The chair of the working group is held jointly by Uwe Sarrazin, Head of Global Education & Learning at GE Renewable Energy, and Gordon Asser, Head of Global PM Operations at Nordex Acciona.

The Working Group Wind Industry Safety Culture is an international initiative of the wind turbine manufacturers Adwen, Enercon, GE, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energies, Nordex Acciona, Senvion and Vestas together with their subcontractors and suppliers. Under the umbrella of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Association VDMA Power Systems, this initiative is targeting to implement an industry wide safety culture for the wind industry to become a safer place to work.

The Working Group Wind Industry Safety Culture has expanded the Seven Safety Principals and the Best Practice Guidelines of Safe Driving, Working at Height and Personal Protective Equipment by the new Safety Ethics as well as Best Practice Guidelines for Civil Works, Electric Safety, Dropped Objects, Tagline Management and Illuminated work in darkness.
